We'll keep fighting till the end
/FERC announced their decision today to grant full operation to Enbridge for the Weymouth compressor station. Though we are disappointed by their decision, we are not surprised. FERC has long been a rubber stamp agency enabling the fossil fuel industry to destroy communities and, ultimately, the planet.
We always knew that FERC could not be relied upon to do the right thing, but we held out some hope for our state agencies. They failed us, too -- the Department of Environmental Protection, MA Department of Public Health, Coastal Zone Management, MAPC. And let us not forget Governor Baker. The so-called "Climate Governor". He failed us and future generations. May his refusal to protect forever be his legacy.
While they failed us, you never did. Right now, as we process and prepare ourselves for the fight ahead, we want you to take a moment to recognize the amazing fight you have helped to wage. Every email you wrote, phone call you made, sign you held, dollar you donated, conversation you had, Facebook post you shared, has made a difference.
When Enbridge first submitted their proposal, they intended to have the compressor station in service by November 2017. Because of you, their plans have been delayed by 3 years. That's incredible. In those three years, we have prevented 133,000 dekatherms of gas from flowing per day. And now, because they are three years behind, they are losing contracts for the gas. The gas is set to be sent to Nova Scotia for export but the Goldboro LNG plant has not even been built yet. The gas industry is scared and they should be. Their business model is growing extinct.
While gas may flow for some time through Enbridge's compressor station, we will keep fighting for as long as it takes to make sure it gets shut down.
As we continue the fight, we want you to have resources to deal with what is happening right now. Many of you have already submitted complaints about noise, odor, light pollution, and health impacts. Please keep this list of numbers handy to call with your complaints.
And don't forget to sign up for Code Red in Weymouth, Alert Quincy in Quincy, and Smart911 in Braintree.
We will continue to fight, through all means available, the operation of this monster in our midst until it is shut down. We have every intention of making it, as Mayor Hedlund says, a $100M White Elephant--a monument to the hubris of Enbridge. We hope you will continue fighting with us.
In Solidarity and Resistance,
The FRRACS Team
