PIP Meeting Recap Part 2
/Thanks to everyone who joined us for the 3+hour(!) virtual PIP meeting with TRC. Though we weren’t surprised, we were disappointed that TRC once again stifled public involvement during this public meeting. If you missed the meeting, or would like to view it again, you can access it here. We should note that they posted the recording the same days that are comments are due, which is today. We asked for extension for the comment period and they denied our request.
We’ve compiled a few short clips of meeting, addressing certain topics. You can view those clips at the links below:
Clip 1: Restore and clean the beach
We asked whether Enbridge/Calpine restore the beach and remove the bricks and clinkers that make it hard to walk on? They said no, they want to see if the soil is contaminated before they even consider restoring the beach. WE DESERVE A CLEAN RESTORED SHORE FREE OF CLINKERS AND BURNER BRICKS.
Clip 2: TRC claims on video that they will NOT close the park
We have TRC Companies, Inc. on the record saying that Enbridge and Calpine Group will NOT close King's Cove Park. We are vigilantly watching to protect and restore King's Cove Conservation Park as they do soil and other contamination sampling.
Clip 3: TRC needs to review firebricks more thoroughly
Participant Question: "All firebrick prior to the 1970s was made with asbestos. The Edgar [coal fired power plant] archives document frequent removal replacement of firebrick from 1920s forward. You need to look more thoroughly." See TRC's response to resident's concerns of mesothelioma
Clip 4: TRC continues to claim that firebricks at the North Parcel do not contain asbestos; we disagree
Insulating firebrick kiln bricks are almost all asbestos. TRC claims there is no asbestos thus far
Clip 5: Addressing access to the West Waterfront Easement
We are happy to see that site investigations will likely not limit the use of the West Waterfront Easement for passive recreation. People used to use the easement for fishing prior to the compressor station construction. We must turn the broken promise of making a park with vegetative buffer into a promise kept.
Clip 6: Underground oil contaminants
TRC Companies believes that the LNAPL (Underground oil) contaminants will not migrate to the Fore River because the compressor station is pushing down. We are concerned about the filled tidelands.
Clip 7: Enbridge plans to use arsenic-laden dirt for landscaping
We have them on the record. Enbridge is planning on using some of the stockpile of contaminated arsenic soil for LANDSCAPING around the COMPRESSOR STATION and "Courtyard". Much of the contaminated soils will be removed off site. What are they planting? Daisies? They are not going to cap the arsenic it with clay soils nor geotextiles.
